In 2024, manufacturers have unveiled next-generation glass fiber cloth variants that offer even greater performance: ultra-thin “MicroWeave” cloth, for example, reduces ski weight by up to 12% while increasing impact resistance by 19%, making it a top choice for professional-grade skis.
“Traditional glass fiber cloth was effective, but it often forced manufacturers to choose between lightness and strength,” said Dr. Elena Carter, materials science director at GAMA. “The new MicroWeave and hybrid glass-carbon cloths eliminate that trade-off. As ski imports and local ski manufacturing rise in China and South Korea, demand for high-quality reinforcement materials has surged. Looking ahead, GAMA predicts that global demand for ski glass fiber cloth will grow by 15-18% in 2025, fueled by ongoing ski industry expansion and further material innovations. “As skis become more specialized – for powder, groomed slopes, or beginner use – the need for tailored glass fiber cloth solutions will only increase,” Dr. Carter added. “We’re also seeing early research into bio-based glass fiber coatings, which could make these materials even more sustainable in the next 3-5 years.”
With the 2024-2025 winter season just months away, ski manufacturers and material suppliers are racing to finalize production plans, ensuring that the latest glass fiber cloth technologies translate into better performance and more sustainable skis for consumers worldwide.
