Harbin, November 17, 2025 – The global snowboarding equipment industry is witnessing a technological leap driven by Chinese manufacturers, who are breaking foreign monopolies with advanced materials and innovative designs. Brands including Tactic and TanJing have recently unveiled flagship snowboard lines featuring carbon fiber composites, bionic structures, and Chinese cultural elements, redefining performance standards for both professional athletes and recreational riders.
Material innovation stands at the forefront of this revolution. Heilongjiang TanJing Composite Materials Co., Ltd. has launched a full-carbon fiber snowboard that weighs just 1.8kg – significantly lighter than traditional 2.5kg models – while boasting superior rigidity and impact resistance. The boards adopt a sandwich structure with poplar wood cores and full-coverage carbon fiber layers, reinforced with Kevlar materials and titanium alloy to enhance toughness and reduce wear. "Our thermal curing prepreg technology has matured, with key indicators like fiber volume content and tensile strength surpassing international standards," said Yu Xinlong, General Manager of TanJing. The brand has built three production lines with an annual capacity of 10,000 sets and plans to add another line in Harbin’s Comprehensive Bonded Zone, targeting annual sales of 120 million yuan.
Bionic design has emerged as a game-changer for versatility across snow conditions. A newly developed modular bionic snowboard, inspired by penguins’ efficient gliding mechanics, has captured market attention. By replicating the streamline curve of penguins’ abdomens, the board reduces movement resistance by approximately 2.3% on bumpy snow compared to conventional models. Its innovative trapezoidal mortise-tenon and hinge connection structure absorbs impact effectively, ensuring stability on powder, hardpack, and mixed snow. The modular design allows quick assembly into short boards, long boards, or even a snow scooter with a rotating seat, catering to both alpine and cross-country skiing needs.
Cultural integration has become a unique selling point for Chinese snowboards. Tactic, a pioneering brand founded in 2003, has gained popularity with its "Guochao" (national trend) series, featuring Peking Opera facial masks and ink wash painting patterns on the board surfaces. Some models even adorn handcrafted Zhangjiakou knitting accessories, making each piece a unique cultural artifact. "Our culturally themed snowboards are bestsellers in Russia and Southeast Asia, where consumers appreciate the blend of performance and art," noted Jin Huiyuan, Tactic’s Chairman. TanJing has also partnered with Harbin Normal University to launch the "Snowy Flight" IP series, featuring cartoon characters based on snow sports, with plans to open a secondary creation platform for snowboarders.
User-centric innovations extend to convenience and accessibility. Tactic has spent two years developing a quick-release binding system, dubbed the "one-step clip," which allows riders to secure their boots without bending down – a significant upgrade from traditional two-buckle designs now under patent review. TanJing has also launched a women-specific board, undergoing over 100 grip tests to ensure optimal ergonomics for female riders. These designs align with the goal of popularizing snow sports among a broader audience, following China’s "300 million people on ice and snow" initiative.
International expansion is a key strategy for these emerging brands. TanJing has reached a strategic cooperation agreement with New Zealand’s RealNZ, launching the premium "Kiwi Power" sub-brand to enter the Southern Hemisphere market. Leveraging RealNZ’s 6 physical stores and global online platforms, the brand aims to tap into Europe’s lucrative snow sports market, where per capita annual spending on snowboards reaches 9.5 euros. Tactic’s products are already exported to South Korea, Japan, and Russia, with overseas orders surging ahead of each snow season.
Industry experts attribute this growth to sustained R&D investment and policy support. "Chinese manufacturers have transformed from followers to leaders by combining material science with user needs," said a senior analyst at China Report Hall. "The integration of sustainability, functionality, and culture has created a unique competitive edge in the global market." Local governments are also backing the sector, with Sanshui District in Zhangjiakou providing policy subsidies to boost innovation in (ice and snow equipment) production.
As Harbin’s ice and snow tourism booms, these technological innovations are further promoting the synergy between industry and culture. "A snowboard is not just sports equipment but a carrier of Chinese culture," said Wen Lihua, a professor at Harbin Normal University’s Art Department. "We aim to showcase Harbin’s landmarks and traditions to the world through these meticulously designed products."
